The Artist / Andrew Collins
Velvet Shadows is where my lifelong fascination with classic cinema, mystery and femininity comes to life.
Long before I ever picked up a paintbrush, I was captivated by the smoky world of film noir and the unforgettable women who inhabited it. Lauren Bacall’s quiet confidence. The elegance of black and white photography. The tension between beauty and danger. Those images stayed with me.
Although my career led me into graphic design, painting was always waiting patiently in the background. Returning to it felt less like discovering something new and more like coming home.
My portraits aren’t attempts to tell someone else’s story. They’re instinctive. Drawn from emotion rather than explanation. Some people see strength. Others see vulnerability, seduction, defiance or heartbreak. I don’t try to decide which is right.
Perhaps that’s why the collection is called ‘Velvet Shadows‘.
Velvet suggests warmth, beauty and comfort.
Shadows remind us that not everything is revealed.
I simply paint what refuses to leave my imagination.
